Second Swamp Sparrow and Early Sunset

Sunny and fairly calm around town. Frosty morning (with some ice at the edge of Swan Lake), warming into the 40s during the day.

As I was heading out, I received a text from Connor about a Swamp Sparrow at Swan Lake.

When I arrived, he was watching from the road side south of the peninsula.

I had messaged Sulli about it, but was there before him, so I figured I would wait and see, as I did not want to accidentally disturb it and have it fly off.

As it turned out, it was more active than most I’ve seen. It popped up and flew along the marshy lining the lake alongside the road. I had a couple of quick looks of it out in the open, but was not able to get photos. I did get a picture when it was in the clump of salmonberries along the inflow to the lake.

Shortly after Sulli arrived, it rapidly moved down the lake shore, then flew across to the thicket of salmonberries across the lake (by ALPS). Later in the day Sulli was able to get a photo of it in that area when it came down to the water’s edge. He said he spent a long time just waiting and watching before it came out.

There were six Coots on Swan Lake with an additional three on Galankin Island Lake.

I spent rest of morning watching birds at Swan Lake with Sulli, Kitty, and Victoria.

Early in the afternoon, I went out to Starrigavan with Kitty. We walked around the estuary as the tide was nearing high.

It was distinctly lower than Friday, which ended up being highest tide of the series.

No sign of a Swamp Sparrow there, nor did I see the Redhead seen yesterday.

I saw a Hermit Thrush by UAS.

The time change made for an early sunset. I watched for a green flash, but the sun disappeared behind clouds and I didn’t catch one.

From there I went to the airport in case a Short-eared Owl might appear. No luck on that, but did visit with Sulli for a bit before heading home.

I spent the evening visiting with my dad.
