Red Bluff Bay, Day 1

[Text entry written well after the trip based on incomplete memories]

Our party of four arrived in Red Bluff Bay for our multi-day wilderness surveying trip after a beautiful flight over the island in a float plane. We had kayaks waiting for us, and after setting up camp went for a walk up the red bluffs that give the bay its name.

Kitty and I started looking at plants pretty quickly, so Brian and Mary didn’t take long to put some distance between themselves us. While exploring, we did find Polystichum kruckebergii, one of the species we were hoping to locate. I was a little surprised to see large leeches in one of the pools. We had taken turns going for a bit of a dip, but the leeches did not appear to be interested (I don’t know that I would have gotten in had I noticed them before hand).
