Starrigavan Valley and Channel Whale

Boulder Growth
Ferns, bryophytes, and lichens cover a boulder along a small stream in Starrigavan valley.

Many of today’s photos were taken from a walk through the second growth in the valley bottom of Starrigavan. Though I no longer remember the purpose (I think it might have been some preliminary scouting for a second growth study), I joined Kitty LaBounty and Scott Harris for a loop of the broad part of the valley downstream of the rifle range.

It was interesting to see things growing along the small tributary we followed.

Nodules on Alder Roots
Nodules (housing nitrogen fixing bacteria) on red alder (Alnus rubra) roots. Exposed by erosion on a cut bank along a small stream in Starrigavan valley.

Among the novelties for me were my first documentation of the nodules on alder roots which house nitrogen fixing bacteria (Frankia alni).

Humpback Whale in the Channel
A Humpback Whale feeding on herring in the channel.

After class this evening I spent a little time watching a Humpback Whale that was active in the channel – not something I see everyday!
