Greater Scaups

Spent some time birding today. At Halibut Point Rec there were many ducks near shore, no doubt gathered to feed on herring eggs. The birds weren’t the only ones there for the eggs, as quite a number of folks were on the beach with rakes, shovels, buckets and/or wheelbarrows gathering up seaweed with herring eggs. That was the theory, anyway. In practice, it seemed like a lot of the material was partially broken down leaves and woody debris with minimal seaweed or herring eggs. I’m told that woody debris doesn’t really make for very good fertilizer since it requires a fair amount of nitrogen to get broken down further.
