Rainy Day Loon

Heavy overcast and rain throughout much of the day. Not much wind in town.

In the middle of the day I got out for a bit to see what birds might be around. It was more like many of my winter outings, mainly just birding from the car.

I did check the park building for moths. Nothing new there, though I did find a red net-winged beetle. It continues to be quiet at my house. Typically no moths, but occasionally one.

I was a little surprised to see a couple of scaups at Swan Lake. I thought they might be Lesser Scaups, but they were sleeping while I was there. I saw pictures someone else took, and they appeared to be Greater Scaups.

There was a nice breeding plumage Common Loon just hanging out not too far from the shore in the Channel. I had to keep adjusting my position to get pictures through a gap in the trees, but otherwise it was nicely cooperative.

There was a bear seen in the estuary at Starrigavan a bit after 11am, but it was not there when I had a look closer to 1pm.

I played ultimate this evening at Kimsham. The field was quite wet. Time will tell if this is one of those summers where there’s enough rain that it becomes more mud than grass.
