Late Afternoon Clouds

I was struck by the patterns in the layer of clouds over the sound as the sun was setting this afternoon. It seems like they should be able to tell me something, but at this point I’m not sure what. I was especially interested in the undulating and/or wave-like patterns at the leading edge.
