Last week I saw the first bumblebees for this year. Herring are spawning (we caught some from shore yesterday at HPR). Salmonberries with good sun exposure are blooming. The blueberries have been blooming for some time. Wild cucumber (twisted stalk) is coming up. Varied thrushes have been actively singing for the last week or two.
While sitting near Indian River yesterday, a kingfisher came along. People have been catching dolly varden down in front of Totem Park recently. I am not sure where dolly varden spend most of their time, but they do show up hear shore each spring to eat salmon fry leaving the rivers. They apparently did not reach the quota of herring in the opening yesterday, so they opened the fishery up for another hour this afternoon.
