Mt. Edgecumbe from Sandy Beach

I went out to Halibut Point Rec this afternoon with hopes of finding the Ruddy Turnstones reported yesterday.

The tide was reaching its (not especially) low point when I arrived.

I found shorebirds at the mouth of Granite Creek. It took me a few minutes, but I did find Ruddy Turnstones. At first I saw two mixed in with Black Turnstones, then after the birds had moved around a bit, four.

Broken Staircase
Broken staircase at Halibut Point Rec in Sitka, Alaska

With the intention to walk the loop trail on the Magic Island, I discovered that the shore side part of the trail is closed (perhaps permanently?) due to blowdown taking out the stairs. The stairs were old enough, they may have been close to end of life as it was. I clearly wasn’t the first one to push up the trail beside them, but it wasn’t very nice going.

On the south shore, I sat on beach watching for a while. I did not spot any tattlers. I did see several Savannah Sparrows and a Hermit Thrush.

Ancient Spruce Remains
Remains of an ancient spruce which fell along the south loop at Halibut Point Rec in Sitka, Alaska

A large spruce had fallen and been cleared from the upland part of the loop. There were still some needles, so I think it fell last fall. It had come down in a different direction than the trees that took out the stairs, so I’m guessing it was a different storm.

Before going back to my car, I stopped to enjoy the warmth of the sun and the sound of Granite creek while laying on beach rocks.
