Walk around Totem Park

Cloudy this morning, becoming partly cloudy with plenty of sun in the afternoon. Light to moderate winds, and temperatures into the mid 40s.

I got out for a walk around Totem Park this afternoon.

I forgot to mention yesterday the herring eggs washed up on the shore have developed a powerful smell. Today it hit me as I walked past the visitor center. It wasn’t so strong out at the end of the park.

Ravens continue to be very vocal in the park. I imagine they may start thinning out a bit as the herring eggs decay and are washed back into the see by the next high tides.

Duck numbers seemed distinctly lower than yesterday. The diving ducks may have been similarly abundant, but more scattered. I did not see nearly as many dabbling ducks as yesterday.

Plants have really started greening up. I made note of several species that have emerged. It will be a while yet before they all bloom, but it does feel like spring is picking up momentum.

I made some progess getting things cleaned up for doing microscopy with collections. I didn’t get any work done on collections, though. Maybe later this coming week when the rain comes back (though we’re also getting ever closer to shorebird migration).

This evening while walking along Etolin Street after dark, I whistled to see if an owl might respond. I heard what sounded like a screech owl calling from not very far away. The calls were not quite as fully formed as I have heard in the past, but if it was someone imitating an owl, they were doing a much better job of recreating the sound quality than I’ve ever managed.
