Overcast with rain developing later in the day. Temperatures to around 50F. Light to moderate winds.
I walked a loop late morning to early afternoon.
It’s getting to be time for crowberries to bloom. I didn’t find any at the Baranof Street muskeg. I might have looked more, but was discouraged by the number of piles of dog droppings. I didn’t want to accidentally step or kneel on one.
I did document and collect bryophytes from the edge of a small pool along the margins of the bog.
Swan Lake didn’t have many birds on it that I could see when I arrived. I didn’t stay long to see if any emerged from hiding.
From there it was down to Lincoln Street and around the park.
The leaves aren’t quiet developed enough on the mystery rose family plot along the seawalk near the end of the breakwater spur. I’ll check back in a week or so (if I remember).
The tide was coming up, but plenty of tide flats remained uncovered. I scanned for shorebirds (Black-bellied Plovers could show up anytime), but didn’t even see the Surfbirds and Black Turnstones that have been around. One Greater Yellowlegs was foraging along the upper part of the dewatered channel below the estuary.
Bird song has really picked up. I don’t think it was just today, but it stood out to me more today. Song Sparrows, and both species of kinglet were the most abundant singers that I noticed while out.
I wrote up observations and notes for my efforts to track Mount Edgecumbe ash deposits. So far there’s just what I did yesterday, but I expect I’ll gradually do some more intentional poking around and add more photos and notes.
