Early April Sunday Birding

Overcast to mostly cloudy, with occasional light rain. Breezy.

The forecast showers seemed to mostly be happening somewhere else besides over town. While out, I could see dark clouds in multiple directions, but the sun was often breaking through in the central town area.

Hooded Mergansers

I went by Swan Lake this morning and saw a Ring-necked Duck and the pair of Hooded Mergansers.

White-throated Sparrow

After abandoning a bike ride up Harbor Mountain road not far past the cross trail junction, I decided to stake out the White-throated Sparrow.

I sat in my car and listened to an audio book while keeping an eye on the VV’s feeding station. My patience paid off, and I got a brief look at the sparrow before it flew off across Halibut Point Road.

Herring Gull

At the channel I noticed a bird that extra black on its wings. Given its pale yellow eyes, I’m thinking it’s probably a Herring Gull. The feet color was somewhat ambiguous in the photos, but I’m leaning more towards pink.

While sitting watching and listening at the airport a bit later, I heard geese honking. I was able to spot the flock of 50 Canada Geese taking advantage of the south wind and moving quickly over the airport.

This evening LP called about a bird at the estuary. I went out to take a look. From the description, I’m pretty sure it was an adult Northern Goshawk. It apparently had taken a duck (they thought a Northern Shoveler that had been alone in the estuary). It had just flown into the woods shortly before I arrived.
