Return to Pherson Street Rock

Generally overcast with patchy fog this morning. Calm winds and temperatures near 40.

After getting breakfast and then dropping my parents off for their flight south, I headed out for a bit.

Sawmill Cove was fairly quiet.

At Swan Lake I noticed the Sandhill Crane along the shore on the far side. The coot continues at the peninsula.

The lake remains almost entirely covered in ice. With temperatures forecast to be in the 40s this week, perhaps lake will open up a bit in the coming days.

Driving up Lake Street I noticed an adult Northern Goshawk perched in a tree. The viewing was better from Moller Park. Fortunately it seemed in no hurry to leave, so I was able to get pictures of it there.

I returned to the Pherson Street rock and to document some additional organisms. I think there are at least several species on the rock I haven’t photographed. I am thinking about trying to see if I can do a species census of the rock. It might be interesting to see how many species I can find.

When I finished my getting my radio show ready for tomorrow, the light had in the 20 minutes or so that had passed since sunset.

I checked out the feeding station near Sealing Cove and was interested to see 5 White-crowned Sparrows, a White-throated Sparrow, and a Lincoln’s Sparrow all still actively feeding. I did not see any juncos. Perhaps they go to roost earlier (or move further away to roost).
