April Opens Overcast

Overcast and rain falling through midafternoon. A few small cloud breaks allowed sun to shine through before it became overcast again.

My only significant time outside was later this afternoon.

I saw reports on ebird of the Purple Finch still around. I thought it may have left after not seeing any reports for a week or two. That motivated me to go for a walk around the neighborhood.

I heard a Pine Siskin singing from a spruce tree adjacent to the yard with feeders where the finch had showed up repeatedly.

I also noted juncos singing.

While I was watching the feeders, I heard juncos alarming on the other side of a fence. The birds feeding in the yard didn’t respond right away, but did ultimately fly up to more protected vantage points. The alarms didn’t last for long. I wondered if a cat was passing through.

It was quiet at the Swan Lake peninsula. Two swans are still around.

A Black-bellied Plover was reported along the runway, so I checked the airport. Apparently it’s been towards the southeast end of the runway, which is not really very viewable away from the runway.

Long-tailed Ducks were near the shore in the channel so I took a bunch of photos. The Northern Song was motoring through to the north. Some of the passengers also seemed to be taking pictures of the ducks.

Herring activity has been north of town, so haven’t seen much of it other than boats coming and going.

The weather forecast for tomorrow isn’t great. Hopefully it won’t be too bad, and we’ll get to see some stuff on the WhaleFest Food Web fundraiser cruise.
