Stormy Seas, Lightning and Thunder

It was quite windy overnight. I imagine it’s just coincidence, but it seems like most of the strong winds this fall have come during the night time hours. Early this morning, waves were over 28 feet at the Cape Edgecumbe buoy (I think that’s the average of the highest one third of the waves, so presumably some were even higher). I think seas have been continuously over 10 ft at the buoy for several days. While I wouldn’t want to be out there in that, I think it’s interesting to imagine what it might be like.

This evening there were at least 3 flashes of lightning with accompanying thunder. The last flash brought several seconds of thunder. It makes me wonder how the thunder lasts so long when the lighting that generates it is so fast. Why isn’t it just a single bang (perhaps with echos)?
