Fledgling Junco and Flight Out

Dark-eyed Junco Fledgling
One of several Dark-eyed Junco fledglings seen vigorously begging for food around the yard.

[Note: I did not write a journal entry at the time, so the notes that follow are based on the photos, any data I collected, and what faded memories I retain from years after the fact.]

I got photos of some fledgling juncos in the yard shortly before leaving to catch the float plane we would be taking to get over to Baranof Warm Springs. We would be meeting Ken Merrill and the S/V Pauletta, which would be a our base for the trip focused on South Baranof Wilderness area, with visits to Gut Bay and Red Bluff Bay.

Clear Cut Patches
Lines of conifers indicate places where buffers were left for streams.

Visibility was inadequate for the most direct flight over Baranof Island. In the cloudiest conditions flights follow the water channels around the north end of Baranof Island, but our pilot was able to find a way through the valleys and passes of the north end of Baranof Island. Many of these valleys have been logged, which was quite apparent from the air.

Baranof Warm Springs
Baranof Warm Springs is right next to next to the fast flowing cold water flowing out of Baranof Lake.

At Baranof Warm Springs, Kitty and I made a quick visit to the springs before we joined the rest of our group on the boat and began motoring south heading for Gut Bay.
