Daily Observations

Herring Gull

Once again, I’ve not spent too much time outdoors over the last few days. The combination of weather, work, and other responsibilities limited my motivation to make time for getting out. The one outing I did take was with the birding class Friday. We walked along Crescent Harbor, over to the bridge, and then down to ANB Harbor.

Weather: The warmer weather of earlier in the week gave way to cooler temperatures and additional snow. It snowed several more inches Thursday and Friday, but warmed up today and rained a little bit. However, as of 9pm this evening, it’s snowing again. It was pretty windy Wednesday and today, but not as bad Thursday and Friday except with the little squalls that moved through. The weather Thursday and Friday started to seem like spring, with squalls moving through bringing wind and snow, with bright sunshine for brief periods between. The difference with more spring-like weather is rain and hail occuring as well as some snow.

Birds: We didn’t see any unusual birds on the bird walk. We saw Barrow’s Goldeneye, Ravens, Crows, Mallards, Pelagci Cormorants, Bald Eagles, Pigeons, Scaups, Long-tailed Ducks, Herring Gulls, Thayer’s Gulls, Glaucous-winged Gulls, Mew Gulls, possibly a Robin flying, and some Surf Scoters out in Crescent Bay.

Other Notes: I saw a couple of snowdrops blooming in front of NPH. They are right up against the building so they didn’t get buried in the recent snow falls.
