Sitka Blacktail Deer

I learned the reason for all the deer droppings I have been seeing in the neighborhood the last couple of days. This morning when I was walking up the ‘shortcut’ from a short walk to Totem Park, I spotted two deer. They were definitely aware of me, looking over at me each time I moved, but overall they were not overly concerned. I was able to get Melissa’s attention (she had been outside) and she brought Connor over to see the deer. The deer watch Connor and Melissa approach, and Connor did a good job of being quiet to not scare them away. However, when his friend came running over to see what was going on, the deer decided that was enough and moved on to the end of the drive and into the woods.

One of the deer had the nubs indicating the start of antlers. The I was not able to see any on the other deer so I perhaps it was a female. If it is, I wonder if she will have a fawn this year. It seems like it would not be too long until it is time for them to be born.
