Summary: Probably Rare to Uncommon in appropriate habitat. The alpine habitat preferred by this species is not accessible by road, and other access is difficult and/or expensive. Best seen near town on Bear Mountain.

Irregular in numbers; resident above timberline, except that sometimes in winter it descends to near sea level on muskegs. Specimens have been taken on Chichagof, Kruzof, and Baranof Islands (Grinnell 1909; Willett 1914).
