Surf Scoter
Melanitta perspicillata
Summary: Fairly Common along the road system in migration and through winter. Uncommon during the summer, though Fairly Common in nearshore locations away from town. Apparently less abundant locally in recent years. Easily observed from Totem Park Fall through Spring.

Common in summer; abundant migrant and winter visitant. According to Dall and Bannister (1869) Bischoff collected the eggs of this bird. No subsequent worker has noted any evidence of nesting anywhere in southeastern Alaska, however.
