Summary: Common in migration and through winter. Rare in summer. Best seen during winter in the Channel. Sometimes found in spring large numbers along shores where herring have recently spawned.

Common winter visitant and migrant; scarce in summer; one breeding record. In 1940, and again in 1985,1 saw the species as late as 4 June. Grinnell (1898) reported a juvenile taken 15 July 1896. Gibson saw a flock of 7 on 30 June 1975, and there were a few June records on the Sitka Breeding Bird Survey, 1993-97.
