Sitka Spruce
Picea sitchensis
The trees were well spaced in the valley. This allowed for branches to persist fairly close to the base.
It seems clear these spruce trees (Picea sitchensis) got their start some years ago on a log that is now rotted away.
Although I did not get the photo I was trying for, a severe crop revealed interesting structures that were difficult to see in the dim woods.
I'm not sure if this is some sort of mold/fungus or what.
The top of this fungus is somewhat reminiscent of Trametes, but I'm not sure if that's what it is, or not.
The 'teeth' make this seem different than most polypores.
I think this is a Panellus sp, though I've mostly seen those growing on Alder (Alnus spp) before.
