Southeastern Alaska Distribution: Probably throughout, from sea level to the alpine.
Habitat: Many diverse habitats. Usually with other bryophytes, occasionally as pure patches. Not aquatic and rarely on mineral substrates, common on various organic substrates and humic soils.
Comments: The species is discussed in terms of its considerable diversity of form and habitat by Schuster (1969).
