Habitat: Especially common in peatlands, in openings, among Sphagnum and upon trees and shrubs; also in canyons, on humid cliffs and on rocks by lakes and streams (not in splash zone, however). Often as extensive masses. Sea level to the subalpine.
Comments: Fertile when epiphytic, but not so in other habitats, (Schofield, 1968b).
