Herring Cove Trail is a nice one, but it’s quite a ways out the road (by Sitka standards) and I don’t know much about the shuttle services offered (or how far they go, though it seems unlikely to me that one goes that far). There will also be major road construction going on out that way this summer, so I don’t know how that might impact things.

There are other nice trails within easy walking distance of town as well, that you might consider as alternatives, depending on what sort of hike you are looking for.

Hi Matt, I found your blog as I was researching things to do it the Sitka area. I will be taking a cruise to Alaska and Sitka is one of our stops. What things would you reccommend that we do in Sitka? What can you tell me about Herring Cove Trail? I read some other reviews that we could take a free shuttle to a certain point and walk to the trail? Please email if you are able. Thanks so much!

I heard about your radio show with Florence and Scott that aired at 4PM on Sunday, I told my whole family to listen in and low and behold I had a meeting pop up on Sunday no less and I missed the show even though it was the main thing I was looking forward to all weekend! So here I am hoping that there were no technical difficulties and you will be able to post it in the future. Tomorrow I am spending my one day on seaweeds with the 6th graders and had hoped to include stuff I learned from your show…… oh well, if and when it gets posted maybe I can plug students into listening with some activity. So just to let you know that I am hoping to hear it off your website and just know there are people out here appreciating all that you are doing for our community!! Gunalcheesh! Patty Dick

I know I’m a long way away from you but you are quite correct in saying the mantle is too light in colour and lacks the dark feather fringing you would expect on an adult bird.
My observation is with limited experience of Western’s on my trips to the west coast of the USA.

Up In Pelican…Have had a Short-eared Owl around, and a small flock of
Lapland Longspurs. Don’t see them often !

Saw a Short-eared Owl today (10/21) @ 8 a.m. on Cannon Island Drive. Flew from a rock on the causeway to some trees by Eagle Way.

I was looking for some birding info for my visit to Sitka and just stumbled on your website. It is very impressive – so peaceful and thoughtful and tremendous photos. Your commentary makes one feel the experiences you record.

We live in Nebraska in an urban area. I am travelling to Sitka from May 17 -21st to visit my daughter who is a travelling nurse currently assigned to Sitka. She said it is so beautiful that no picture does it justice and I have to see it for myself. We are planning on hiking, whale watching and observing nature. Thanks to your very wonderful photojournal, I’ll be able to identify and note the birds I see.
You are very talented. I think you could sell your articles and photos commercially. Best wishes.
